Ireland - is a member of European Union (EU) since 1973 - is a thoroughly modern nation. The population of the Ireland stands just short of four million people, over 40 percent of whom are under the age of 25. Almost 60 percent of Irish people live in urban areas, with 1.2 million living in or around the capital city Dublin, which is located on the east coast of the island. Dublin is a young, vibrant and cosmopolitan city where many nationalities are represented. A large varieties of cultural attractions, musical entertainment venues, museums, art galleries, theatres, clubs and restaurants can be enjoyed in Dublin and in Ireland's major cities; Cork, Waterford, Galway, Limerick and Belfast.
Ireland Education System
Ireland's long and honorable tradition in educational excellence is recognized the world over. Dating back to the Middle Ages, Ireland held the position of one of the principal education to the western world.
Types of Programs:
The Irish Education System was traditionally divided into three basic levels: Primary (8 years); Secondary (5 or 6 years) and Third level which offers a wide range of opportunities from post-Secondary courses, to vocational and technical training, to full degree and the highest post-graduate level.
1. Primary Education
The primary education system emphasizes a child-centered approach and is founded on the belief that high quality education enables children to realize their potential as individual and to live their lives to the fullest capacity appropriate to their particular stage of development.
2. Second Level Education
The second-level education sector in Ireland comprises secondary, Vocational, Community and Comprehensive Schools. The types of schools mainly differ on the basis of administration and sources funding.
3. Higher Education
Third Level Education System in Ireland is broad in scope and encompasses the university sector, the technological sector, the college of education and private, independent colleges. The first three grouping which comprise 34 institutions are autonomous and self governing, but are substantially state funded.
Programmes available at Third Level Institutions:
One-Year Certificate : 1 year full-time course
National Certificate : 2 years full-time course
National Diploma : 1 year after National Certificate
Bachelor's Degree : Normally 3 or 4 year course
Graduate Diploma : Usually 1 year
Masters Degree : Either by research or through a taught programme-1 or 2 years duration.
Doctorate (PhD) : Usually takes a minimum of 3 years of original research.
Entry Requirements :
An undergraduate degree from a recognized university in the relevant subject, although some master's courses (Conversion Courses) are designed into a specific field like Information Technology where relevant undergraduate degree is not required. Students are normally expected to have a postgraduate degree for research program. Though it is not mandatory to appear for any English Language Test but some institutions may require. It is suggested to students to appear for IELTS examination and achieve a minimum of band 6.5 (no individual band less than 6.0). Some institutions may require higher level of English proficiency.
Tuition Fees and Living Expenses :
The tuition fees vary from course to course and from institution to institution. The tuition fees usually vary from Euro 8,000 to Euro 13,000 per annum, but some Masters programmes have lower fee structure. The living expenses vary depending on the type of accommodation preferred and on the personal expenditure of the student. The estimated expenses per annum are around Euro 8,000 to Euro 10,000 which include accommodation, food, travel expenses, clothing and communication etc.
Part Time Work :
All international students are authorized to work for up to 20 hours per week during term time and full time during vacations.
